Coal to biomass conversions

EnFloTech play a key role in converting conventional coal mills to operate successfully on biomass pellets, namely, coal to biomass conversions. This was demonstrated when the company assisted Drax, the largest biomass power station in the world at the time, in converting its Babcock 10E10 mills.

The design is based on the philosophy that biomass pellets consist of a controlled composition of wood flakes. The pre-pelletised particle size distribution (PSD) can be regulated, and if it meets the minimum boiler specifications, the original mills are used solely to break the pellets into these pre-pelletised PSD.

EnFloTech’s design ensures no particle recirculation by eliminating eddies that can cause suspended particle clouds. By carefully controlling the air circulation behaviour within the mill and its velocity.

Coal to biomass conversions in mills will achieve:

  • Desired throughput to run the boiler at 100% MCR
  • Stable boiler firing
  • Elimination of mill blockages
  • Prevention of material settling in PF pipes
  • Equal distribution to PF pipes
  • Elimination of biomass flake suspension
  • Elimination of biomass pellet rejection

To date, EnFloTech has successfully converted the mills at both Drax and Lynemouth Power Stations. We are proud to contribute to the UK’s reduced CO2 emissions goals.
